The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is a non-profit professional medical oncology society in Europe.
ESMO offers post-graduate education and training in clinical cancer care and research, and produces evidence-based recommendations for basic standards of cancer care. While the majority of ESMO's 6,000 members are medical oncologists, actual membership spans over 100 countries and also includes radiation and surgical oncologists, as well as other oncology healthcare professionals actively involved in cancer treatment, research, and patient care.
Founded in 1975 by Georges Mathé and Maurice Schneider, in Nice, France, as the Société de Médicine Interne Cancérologique, ESMO took on its present name in 1980.
Founded in 1990, ESMO’s flagship scientific journal, Annals of Oncology, publishes articles addressing medical oncology, surgery, radiotherapy, pediatric oncology, basic research and the comprehensive management of patients with malignant diseases. Annals of Oncology is the official journal of ESMO and from 2008 of the Japanese Society for Medical Oncology (JSMO)
Annually updated recommendations for a basic standard of cancer care providing evidence-based information for physicians, including incidence of the malignancy, diagnostic criteria, staging of disease and risk assessment, treatment plans and follow-up.
The annual ESMO Congress, held every second year in joint partnership with the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) is attended by 15,000 participants. The congress presents the latest scientific developments in basic, translational and clinical cancer research and contextualizes new findings for practical implementation in every day patient care.
Together with other European oncology societies, ESMO organizes conferences in its four core specialty areas of breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, genitourinary cancer and lung cancer. ESMO also organizes educational symposia on innovative topics in oncology. In addition ESMO provides faculty speakers and accredits high quality oncology events with the ESMO Label.
ESMO holds Patient Seminars within its annual meeting for cancer patients, their families and caregivers.
ESMO publishes handbooks, scientific meeting reports, and medical oncology training guidelines. The Society provides fellowships for research training for young oncologists, an Exam in Medical Oncology and an accreditation program for institutes providing patients with integrated supportive and palliative care. Through an online professional networking platform ESMO members collaborate, interact and share knowledge on topics of research and clinical practice.
